World AIDS Day at Kyambogo August 2023

CONCEPT OVERVIEW

World AIDS Day 2023 at Kyambogo

EVENT: Awareness and Testing Day

Each year, on 1 December, the world commemorates World AIDS Day.Despite the virus only being identified in 1984, HIV remains a major global public health issue, having claimed 40.4 million [32.9–51.3 million] lives so far with ongoing transmission in all countries globally, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

So this day is important because it reminds the people that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education.
Results from UNAIDS on the global HIV response reveals that during the last two years of COVID-19 and other global crises, progress against the HIV pandemic has faltered, resources have shrunk, and millions of lives are at risk as a result. In Uganda, the number of People Living with HIV increased from 1.2M to 1.4M largely due to improved access and utilization of HIV services like testing, care and treatment – UNAIDS- HIV AND AIDS RESPONSE 2020

in Uganda. Previous reports have found that university students in Uganda comprise a sexually active population, although the prevalence of HIV or sexually transmitted infections (STI) has not been measured.
There is inadequate information on the burden of HIV infection, and on the prevalence of the risk factors for HIV transmission among University students in Uganda. Routine sources of data such as HIV surveillance and national population-based AIDS Indicator surveys do not provide information on institutional populations such as University students. Moreover, these sub-populations require interventions to address the risk factors that expose them to HIV infection in their unique settings.

In lieu of this background, Girls Life Line Organisation (GLLO) is targeting University and tertiary institutions, communities around institutions and refugee host communities to create awareness, mental health counselling and emotion wellness among students
Previous activities carried out were in Kyambogo University, HIV counselling and testing, wellness were successfully done

1.2 Problem Statement:

Today, scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. However despite this, Uganda currently counts approximately 170,000 Youth Living With HIV/AIDs and figures are expected to rise as more youth remain highly vulnerable to the infection, youth do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many youth living with the condition.
