Empowering Health in Kampala: A Multi-Day Medical Camp Targeting Taxi Park Users and Surrounding Communities in Old taxi park and Usafi
1. Introduction:
FPSDI together with GLLO, are organising a four-day medical camp in Kampala, Uganda, targeting taxi park users (drivers, sex workers) and surrounding city dwellers. The camp aims to improve access to healthcare services and promote awareness about critical health concerns like HIV, Hepatitis, prostate cancer, Malaria and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among these vulnerable communities.
2. Justification:
HIV: Uganda faces a national HIV prevalence rate of 6.3% among adults (15–49 years), with even higher rates observed in groups like sex workers and truck drivers [1].
Prostate Cancer: It is the most common cancer among Ugandan men, with Kampala exhibiting particularly high incidence rates compared to other regions [2].
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): STIs are widespread in Uganda, particularly among individuals engaging in high-risk behaviours. Easy access to testing and treatment is essential for preventing further transmission and minimising associated health complications.
Malaria: Despite a lot of efforts to fight malaria, in 2021 Uganda had the 3rd highest global burden of malaria disease (5.1%) and the 7th highest level of deaths (3.2%)
These concerning statistics highlight the urgent need for targeted interventions to address these critical health issues in Kampala. The proposed medical camp intends to bridge this gap by offering accessible testing, education, and early detection opportunities, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

3. Specific Objectives:
i. Increase access to free and confidential HIV testing and counselling for 1,500 individuals.
ii. Provide STI testing and treatment services/ linkage to care to 800 individuals.
iii. Offer prostate cancer screening for 500 male participants aged 50 and above.
iv. Provide Malaria testing and treatment/ Donation of mosquito nets
v. Raise awareness about HIV, prostate cancer, and STIs through educational workshops and outreach materials.
4. Target Population:
Taxi park users (drivers, sex workers)
Surrounding residents of areas near the designated locations
